Creating a Level External Control

A Level external control can link to one or more other Level controls in your HAL configuration. This control allows your external control system to get and set the value of a set of linked level controls – from 0 to 100.0% using a range of values from 0 to 1000.

note: Level external controls are always in % (between 0 to 100.0%). Once the external control links to a Level control block within the audio flow, then the Level block's Max and Min values dictate the dB range between max (100%) and 0% (min). For example, setting the Max to 0 dB and the Min to -30 dB means each 1% change in the external control value changes the Level 0.3 dB. (30 / 100 = 0.3). Thus, with these max and min settings, changing from a value of 100.0% to 90.0% turns down the Level 3 dB. If Off at Min is checked, the audio will be muted when the value is at min (0%).

To create a Level external control:

1. Click the Processing tab to open the Processing Workspace.

2. Create your Processing Map, configuring the system as you want it to behave when this level control changes. Identify the other level controls that you want to link with your new external control system Level control.

3. On the Processing Workspace toolbar, click Control Systems then External Controls to open the External Control Systems dialog box.

4. Click the Level tab.

5. In the lower right corner of the dialog box, click the button to add a new Level control the list.

6. Customize the control name

   This step is optional but recommended. Naming external controls as you create them helps tremendously when working with multiple controls. To edit the name, click the text symbol next to your new listed control, and then type the name you want in the edit box that appears. Press the Enter key or click the X on the text edit box to close the box and save the name. To cancel, press the Esc key.

7. If desired, change the Number for the control

   This step is optional. The Halogen software selects a unique number for a control when you create it in the Control Systems dialog. You only need to change this number if your external control system requires a number different than what Halogen selected or if you just want to create your own set of numbers. Remember though, the number must be unique among all controls in the Control Systems dialog – Halogen won’t let you set the same number for two controls even if they are different types.
